Pet Passport Scheme
I know there are hundreds of sites which already cover this but I thought it might be useful to share the procedure we had to undertake from our vet in Jersey. Basically you can take a dog from Jersey to Europe but it cant come back again if it hasn't got a Pet Passport. It is a bit more involved than that but I am purely talking about Jersey here. The Scheme allows you to travel to and from different places around the world providing your dog, cat, etc has passed the required tests and had the necessary vaccinations.
First of all the dog must be microchipped. It costs about £20 and can be done at the vets when the dog is 12 weeks old or older.
Next, your pet must have a rabies vaccination. Then wait 2 weeks.
Then the dog will require a second rabies vaccination. Then wait 3 weeks
The dog will then be required to have a blood test to ensure the vaccination was successful. Approximately 2 weeks later you should receive the results.
Once you get your test result and your pet passes, its the date of the blood test plus 6 months that will give you the date of travel for your pet.
Until that time has passed your dog CANNOT return to the UK !!
To bring the pet back to the UK, you need a valid Pet Passport, this means that Tic and Flea treatments must have been given no less than 24 hours and no more than 48 hours before travel.
The whole procedure for the rabies vaccination and blood test (excluding the Microchip) is approximately £170.
You will need to ensure that the boosters are kept up before the Passport Lapses or you will need to undertake the whole process again !
